Snapchat’s $157.5 million founder dispute.Carousel

Snapchat’s early team conflict became an ownership dispute.
Reggie Brown worked with Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy during Snapchat’s early development. In 2013, Brown sued, asserting rights to intellectual property used by the company. The parties settled in 2014. Snap’s IPO filing disclosed a $157.5 million settlement, fully paid by the end of 2016. A settlement is not a court finding that the allegations were proven.
Our takeaway: talk about ownership, responsibilities and what happens if someone leaves before conflict makes those conversations harder. This is a lesson drawn from the case, not a claim that a particular agreement would have prevented it.
Once a dispute starts, it is too late to prevent that dispute. You can still respond—but learning earlier gives you more time to prepare.

Would you book a room you could barely see?
Early in Airbnb’s story, the founders visited hosts to take better listing photos. Joe Gebbia recounts this in his conversation with Reid Hoffman.
Our takeaway: before adding another feature, find out what makes a customer hesitate. It might be missing information or a reason to trust you.
